Your Last Kiss For Me
The Fivepenny Piece
EMI
2187
Release
Date: 19th July 1974
This
was Fivepenny Piece's first single to be issued
on the EMI label, following the release
of their first six singles on EMI's Columbia
imprint. This was the only EMI single by the
group to be graced with a picture cover, albeit
a monochrome one. The front showed a portrait
of the group. Both sides of the record were
produced by Bob Barratt with accompaniment
arranged and conducted by Harry Robinson.
The 'A' side was written by the established
writers Roger Greenaway and Tony Macaulay,
who between them had notched up several chart
hits as writers for other artists in the 1960s
and '70s - Gene Pitney, The Fortunes, The Fifth
Dimension, Long John Baldry, The Foundations,
The Hollies, The New Seekers, and many more.
Roger had also tasted chart success in his own
right as half of the duo David and Jonathan,
partnered by Bristol's Roger Cook.
It seems likely that EMI were pushing for chart
success with this record, which is unashamedly
a pop song; nonetheless, it stands up well against
similar records which made the charts at the
time. Sadly, it never made the charts in spite
of this.
The 'B' side was written by John Meeks and Colin
Radcliffe, also in more of a pop vein than most
of their material. The song was to reappear
on the 1977 Telling Tales album.
The label shown above is the demo copy. In accordance
with EMI policy by this time, the demo copy
of the single looks identical to the regular
issue, but overprinted in the centre (the release
date, 'Demo Record - Not for Resale' text, and
the 'A' on the first side). The regular issue
labels have not been pictured above.
A minor point to note is that on the cover the
group is billed as The Fivepenny Piece,
whereas on the record label it's simply Fivepenny
Piece (highlighting the confusion about
the group's proper name). Not only that, but
the title of the 'A' side is given incorrectly
on the sleeve as "Save The Last
Kiss For Me"
Side
