The River Cam in Greyfield Wood ideal otter habitat Otter Project

Purpose of the project

To carry out a survey to assess the population of Otters in the Cam Valley area.

What that involves

  • Training volunteers
  • Holding field trips, workshops and talks
  • Carrying out surveys on looking for signs of Otter, spraint, footprints, food remains
  • Mapping the results of any findings
  • Feeding results into Regional and National recording schemes
  • Maintaining good relationships with landowners and keeping them informed of progress

What we have achieved

The project was started in 2006. We are finding signs of Otter on many of the waterways in the area.
The project may be extended to monitor future population changes.
