The Mangledwurzels

The Mangledwurzels showing that they can drive a tractor at the Animal Farm Adventure Farm in Berrow (27 Aug 2007) Hedge Cutter & The Mangledwurzels are a three-piece Scrumpy & Western band based in Somerset celebrating the works of the Bard Of Somerset, Adge Cutler and The Wurzels. The Mangledwurzels play Wurzels songs, old and new, blended with self-penned titles and pop standards 'Mangled' in true Wurzels tradition.

The Mangledwurzels started as a four-piece, and made their debut supporting local glam rock band The Glambusters at The Weston Hotel in Bath on Friday 13th May 2005. Not an auspicious date, but it matched the thirteen-song set they were performing. Fortified by the fine ales the pub serves, a rowdy crowd - mostly players and officials from Odd Down FC - convinced the foursome that perhaps a Wurzels tribute band wasn't the stupid idea they had originally feared. More gigs were planned, and The Mangledwurzels were on their way.

The Mangledwurzels are, for the most, established musicians with a considerable pedigree. Seth (Dave) also performed as Ziggy Sawdust with glam rock band The Glambusters, and was a founder member of The Rollin’ Clones. He also played with rhythm & blues favourites Dressed To Kill alongside Hedge (Kev) - having graced numerous local stages including the Bandstand at The Glastonbury Festival in 2000, the same stage as The Wurzels. Jethro (Frank), by exception, has spent more time booking and promoting bands than playing. Originally a bass guitarist, the May debut was his first live performance since his band Orion split up in June 1984.

The Mangledwurzels played on BBC Somerset Sound's Live Music Friday with Jo Phillips on 17 February 2006. You can listen back to the interview, together with a live performance of The Rat Song, by clicking on this audio link:
