Hunt's Devon Cider

Description

The Hunt family have been making cider in Paignton since the 1700's, and moved to Higher Yalberton Farm in the 1918. William Hunt installed the press they have now just after the Second World War, and instead of selling his apples to Whiteway's began making cider himself. Yalberton Farm has eight hectares of cider orchards and a purpose-built cider barn dating from 1832.

Today, they make about 5000 gallons a year, and still run a four hundred acre farm, keeping cattle, sheep and poultry. We also operate a small camping and caravan site (www.broadleighfarm.co.uk). Cider is sold at the farm gate, with the previous year's cider ready to sell in July and August. They sell about half the cider they make directly from the farm; the rest is sold to local retailers and pubs.

Hunt's is the nearest scrumpy supplier to the Torbay resorts (the only one in the area since Churchward's closed a while back). A must if you're staying in Torquay or Paignton - the ideal place to keep stocked up during your holidays!

Ciders

Proper scrumpy made by traditional methods using only their own apples are used on this working dairy farm. Available Sweet, Medium or Dry - all made from fruit from the farm's own orchards. Cider dispensed through serving window, straight from the barrels you can see inside. Friendly service.

Directions

Directions by road: Less than a mile off the A385 Torbay - Totnes road. Coming from Paignton, turn left in the village of Collaton St Mary into Stoke Road, immediately before the Parkers Arms pub (towards Stoke Gabriel). Follow the slightly bendy road for about half a mile and where the main road bears right, take the second turning on the left towards Yalberton - you should see the "Cider" sign straight ahead at the junction. You'll see the farm's Cider sign on the right a few yards down the lane. Ring the bell at the window on the left of the farm entrance for service.
