| Description |
Cider
maker Barry Topp (pictured top
right) makes his cider in the New Forest
by traditional methods, pressing during
October and November using their own
orchard apples together with true cider
fruit from traditional cider orchards.
After fermentation the cider is blended
into freshly emptied whisky barrels
to enhance the flavour. Although some
single varieties of fruit (like the
famed Kingston Black) will produce a
fine cider without blending. Their aim
is to produce an interesting draught
cider that is free from artificial colouring
and flavouring.
Barry
can often be seen at country fairs and
steam rallies selling his excellent
scrumpy from his thatched mobile scrumpy
wagon! When
Barry isn't making or selling scrumpy
he has a part-time job as a roadie with
a difference - instead of lugging equipment
around, he provides the scrumpy supplies
for his local Hampshire Scrumpy & Western
band The
Plonkers at their gigs!
New
Forest Cider have an Annual Steam Pressing
Weekend held at the start of October.
This is your chance to see cider made
the old fashioned way using a 'Workman'
steam driven press and an antique rachet
twin hand screw press filtered through
straw. 2008 dates have yet to be announced. |
| Ciders |
Available
Sweet, Medium or Dry on draught. He also
makes Kingston Black cider and sells bottled
ciders. Also for sale are various sized
earthenware containers up to a gallon
and other souvenirs and goods. During
the pressing season (October - early December)
he is happy to let visitors see his pride
and joy, an antique Ratchet Twin Screw
Press, in action. |
