Cider Houses

Park Cider (formerly Hogshead Cider)

Description

Park Fruit Farm orchards near Frinton-on-Sea, on the Essex-Suffolk border were planted in 1935. They grow 55 varieties of fruit including over 40 varieties of apples and 4 varieties of pears. They are a medium-sized farm, and a family farm which is now into the third generation. They are very well known locally since they have a busy farm shop, where they sell the majority of all the fruit grown on the farm and many other farm products - as well as Park Cider.

Ciders

Pure cider is made on the farm in the traditional East Anglian way. Dessert and Culinary apples as grown in East Anglia have less of a tannin content as found in the West Country. The resulting cider has a rich fruit apple flavour which is very dry and refreshing, more like a dry white wine.

Park Cider make it by fermenting the apple juice out to dryness on its own natural yeasts, with absolutely no additives. The cider is carefully racked on in stages, to ensure the yeast sediments are removed as they settle out. It is also important to keep the cider well sealed. The cider is fermented and allowed to mature in the wooden barrels which allows specific fermentations to be carried out, giving the cider a rich flavour.

They sell the cider in 75cl bottles (see picture), in half gallon plastic 'jugs', or - with prior notice - in 5 gallon polypins on deposit.
