One
might consider that a a rural product like
cider being made in the heart of industrial
Yorkshire to be a bit of a paradox - but in
this case, it is exactly what you would imagine.
Saxon Cider is made in an industrial unit
in Dewsbury entirely from apple concentrate;
not so much a cider farm, more an industrial-scale
home brewer!
In
it's defence, Saxon Cider has made a name
for itself by creating a range of ciders with
a distinctive taste - described by one pub
a "similar to scrumpy cider with something
extra as they are brewed by an Italian who
has added his own style" - make of that
what you want! And in an area not renown for
its real ciders, Saxon Cider is the closest
that most punters can get to the real thing.
Saxon Ciders are often found at real ale pubs
and beer festivals (including those run by
CAMRA), mostly in the north of England. Not
a real cider, but one can't help but applaud
a small scale producer taking on the big boys
at their own game. |
