Wurzels Questions
Can You Help?
Throughout
the Wurzelmania! site there are various questions scattered
about - all to do with The Wurzels and Adge Cutler.
The questions have been collected together on this page. If YOU,
dear Scrumpy & Western reader, can answer any of these
questions, we at the Scrumpy & Western Page will be eternally
grateful! We might even buy 'ee a pint next time we see thee down
the Black 'Orse! So, if you know the answers, Don't
Tell 'Ee - Tell I!

Recording Session
Details (Dates, etc.)
I'd
like to know the exact dates of all Adge Cutler & The Wurzels
recording sessions, and also in the case of Adge, when certain
tracks were recorded. Can you provide any details? For the background
information to these questions, see the Wurzel
Sessions section of the site.
-
Can anyone provide any details of when/where any of the following
songs by Adge Cutler & The Wurzels were recorded, i.e.
at which session, dates, etc.? They were all originally issued
as singles and not on any albums except the later compilations:
- All Over Mendip - the single
version
- Aloha Severn Beach - the single
version
- Champion Dung Spreader - the
single version
- Chitterling
- Don't Tell I, Tell 'Ee
- Faggots Is The Stuff
- I Wish I Was Back On The Farm
- My Threshing Machine
- Poor, Poor Farmer
- Up The Clump - the single version
My guess is that Faggots Is The Stuff may have been recorded
at the Webbington Country Club session for Cutler Of
The West - maybe you were there and know for certain?
-
Does anyone know the exact dates of any of the following recording
sessions?
- the Cutler Of The West 1968 session
at the Webbington Country Club
- the Carry On Cutler! 1969 session
at the Webbington Country Club
- the Carry On Cutler! 1969 session
at the White Buck Inn, Burley
Details of the Carry On Cutler! sessions in particular
are confusing and any clarification would be appreciated - see
also the next three questions below
-
Does anyone know which tracks of the Carry On Cutler! album
were recorded at the Webbington Country Club and which
tracks were recorded at the White Buck Inn, Burley?
-
The version of Aloha Severn Beach on the 1969 Carry
On Cutler! album is a different cut from the 1968 single version.
However, the album states that the track was recorded in 1968.
Is this correct, or was the album version actually recorded in
1969?
[Note: The two versions are different, but similar enough to make
it seem likely they were recorded around the same time, possibly
even at the same session. - Zider Ed]
- The
version of All Over Mendip on the 1969 Carry On Cutler!
album is a different cut from the 1967 single version. However,
the album states that the track was recorded in 1967. Is this
correct, or was the album version actually recorded in 1969?
[Note: In this case, the two versions are markedly different -
even the arrangement differs between the two. It therefore seems
more likely that the later version was indeed recorded at a later
date than the 1967 one - Zider Ed]
- Can
anyone confirm that the 45 rpm single versions of the following
songs by Adge Cutler & The Wurzels are the same as
those on the albums?
- When The Common Market Comes To Stanton
Drew
- Easton-In-Gordano
- Ferry To Glastonbury
- Saturday Night At The Crown
- Does
anyone know who played the Hawaiian guitar on Aloha Severn
Beach (either version)?

Questions
-
Does anyone know of any records by The Wurzels or Adge
Cutler not listed in the Wurzelmania!
Discography?
-
Were there any other songs recorded at the same session as I'd
Love To Swim In The Zuider Zee? Was that song ever issued
as a single / on an album (apart from the two Don't Tell
I, Tell 'Ee compilations)?
-
There is a gap of about five years between Adge Cutler's
1969 album Carry On Cutler! and his death in 1974, during
which the only known record issued by Adge and The Wurzels
is the single Little Darlin' / Mother Nature Callin'. Does
anyone know if there were any other records made / issued during
this period, or if there weren't, why not?

Other Miscellaneous
Wurzel Questions
- Adge
Cutler's Look At 'Ee Lookin' At I, The Market Gardener
and Down In Nempnett Thrubwell are all co-creditted with
Henry Davis. They were all issued by The
Wurzels after his death, but did Adge ever record any of these
songs himself - or did Henry put music to three sets of unfinished
Adge lyrics?
- Adge
Cutler has mentioned a few songs written by a bloke called Len
"Uke" Thomas - these were all written in Bristol
dialect, and I assume Len used to sing them in the 1950s or 1960s,
possibly (I'm guessing from his nickname!) accompanying himself
on ukulele. Does anyone know anything about Len Thomas, and can
anyone provide the words and/or music for any of his songs? Does
anyone know if Len or anyone else ever recorded any of the songs?
I asked Fred Wedlock about this and he knew Len's name
but couldn't throw any more light on him or his songs. The songs
mentioned by Adge (but as far as I know, never recorded by him)
were entitled "Wassfink Of 'Ee, Den?", "Thee
Bissn't Gonna Get'n Out Of I" and "Thee's Better
Keep Thee Eye On 'Ee".
-
Can
anyone identify the mystery band on the cover of the Little
Darlin' single by Adge Cutler & The Wurzels? (right)
-
In the Adge Cutler version of The Mixer Man's Lament
(on the first album), the name of the ganger has been overdubbed
by electric guitar (presumably in the studio). Does anyone know
what the name was, and why it was edited out? [On The Wurzels'
1977 version they use the name Ol' Les Stroud - is this
the same name as Adge used?]
-
Can anyone identify the female singer on the Wurzels recording
of School Days, Young Days?
-
Can anyone provide any details about past and present members
of The Wurzels, such as dates when members of the band
joined / left?, Did they go on to make solo careers?, What are
they doing these days?, etc., etc.
-
There's a rumour that the Wurzels might issue either or
both of the parodies used in the Ambrosia ads as a single.
Can anyone confirm or deny this, or provide any further information?
Maybe someone who works for Ambrosia can provide some more
info...?
If
you know the answers to any of the above questions, or can provide
any information that might help, please Don't
Tell 'Ee - Tell I!
