Wurzelography
- Wurzels Past & Present
Below
are listed all known memnbers of Adge Cutler & The Wurzels,
and The Wurzels, past and present. Each band member
links to a page with more information about that person. Below is
a Wurzelogram charting the arrival and
departures of the various band members.
We
also have some information about those people who, while never part
of the band, have played a major part in the story of Adge Cutler
& The Wurzels, and The Wurzels: managers, producers, and other
musicians who have appeared on Wurzels records over the years.
And
not to be forgotten, those musicians who have been credited for
their performances on the various band recordings:
- 'Dapper'
Dan is introduced as the drummer on the track Up
The Clump on the 1968 album Cutler Of The West
(but not credited on the album sleeve).
- Eddie
Clayton and Douggie Wright are both
credited on drums on the 1969 Carry On Cutler! album.
- Andy
White,
Dougie Wright and Tony Fennell
are all credited on drums on the 1975 The
Wurzels Are Scrumptious!
album.
- Andy
White, Dougie Wright and The
Keith Monk Sound are all credited on the 1976 Combine
Harvester album 'for their support'!
- Sue
Martine and Andy White are both thanked
on the 1977 Golden Delicious album sleeve notes. One
can presume that Andy was the drummer on the album; Sue's input
remains a mystery, but one would presume it was musical!
- Rod
Owen
(The Wurzels musical director) and Ed Welch (The
Wurzels arranger) on keyboards, Dougie White
(drums) are credited on the 1978 I'll Never Get A Scrumpy
Here album. Bill
Pinell is also mentioned on the sleeve notes on the album
sleeve as 'our ever cheerful drummer' - this is the first and
only time I have heard him mentioned.
- Geoff
Betsworth (acoustic guitar, dobro, steel guitar and hamonies)
and Malcolm Mason (guitar, sequences and hamonies) played
on and composed material for the I Want To Be An Eddie Stobart
Driver EP (1995).
-
Becky Hutchison, Emma
Richardson, Anna Chaddock and Sarah
Clarke - backing vocals and cheers on I Want To Be
An Eddie Stobart Driver.
- Russ
Crook
- Additional Guitars on Never Mind the Bullocks, Ere's The
Wurzels.
-
Chris Goulstone - 'Rawk' guitar on Rock DJ
and Why Does It Always Rain On Me on Never Mind the
Bullocks, Ere's The Wurzels.
-
Alan Wilson
- Rockabilly guitar on Country House and Tubthumping
on Never Mind the Bullocks, Ere's The Wurzels.
-
Reg Watson - Steel guitar on It Wasn't Me
on Never Mind the Bullocks, Ere's The Wurzels.
- Cally
P.
- Backing vocals on Oo Ar Just A Little Bit, Why
Does It Always Rain On Me, Rock DJ and Tubthumping
on Never Mind the Bullocks, Ere's The Wurzels.
- Bob
Noxious
- Guest vocals on It Wasn't Me, Come On Santa
and Rock DJ on Never Mind the Bullocks, Ere's The
Wurzels.
- Jack,
Ali and Hannah Greenwood
- Backing vocals on Dead From The Waist Down and Rock
DJ on Never Mind the Bullocks, Ere's The Wurzels.
-
Tony Blackburn - Vocals on I
Am a Cider Drinker 07.
In
addition Mervyn Hancock's book Wurzel's World mentions keyboard
player Paul Buck, bass player Ron Keys
and drummer Bill Pinnell as musicians who have
supported the band over the years. I have no idea who these people
were - more information gratefully received.
If
anyone knows anything more about the people listed above, or knows
of anyone missing from the list, then I'd be interested to hear
from you. I'd also be interested to know what became of former band
members - did any of 'em make any further records, take up different
careers, or what? If you have any news, don't keep it to yourself
- please let us know.

The
Others...
Those
people who, while never part of the band, have played a major part
in the story of Adge Cutler & The Wurzels, and The Wurzels.
Acker
Bilk
Adge Cutler's employer (??-??) |
Acker
Bilk's part in The Wurzels story pretty much ended before the
band started. Adge Cutler worked as Acker's road manager-cum-driver;
and kept his employer amused - and himself awake - but singing
self-penned songs as they drove. It was Acker's initial support
that gave Adge the confidence to pursue his own musical career.
[also see Acker
Bilk's page on the Scrumpy & Western website]
|
John
Miles
Wurzels manager (1966-1987) |
In
June 1966, Adge Cutler 'broke
into' band manager John Miles' office with
demos, and the idea of Adge Cutler & The Wurzels was conceived.
John would remain the band's manger through the evolution of
the band, and lead them through the death of Adge, their rise
in and fall from pop fame, and after EMI dropped them, set up
his own label to continue releasing their material.
Although 1987 has been stated as when John ceased as The Wurzels
manager, it might have been as early as 1983 when The Wurzels
stopped releasing material on John's own label. Confirmation
either way would be appreciated. |
Bob
Barrett
Wurzels record producer (1966-1980) |
Bob
was seconded by EMI to act as The Wurzels record producer on
the band's debut album in 1966. He continued to produce all
their albums and singles until EMI terminated their contract
with The Wurzels in 1980. This last work was the Drunk On
A Saturday Night single released in Feb 1980. Bob also
composed a number of Wurzels songs over the years - and was
an important cornerstone in the Wurzels story. As announced
in the Wurzelmania News at the time, Bob passed away at the
age of 65 on Monday 26th January 2004. [new
page under construction] |
Ed
Welch
Wurzels
musical arranger/director (1978-1980 or 81)
|
Ed
worked as music director and arranger for The Wurzels.
He is first credited on the I'll Never Get A Scrumpy Here
album in 1978, and he workled alongside Bob Barrett until 1980,
after which time he took over the producer role as well. He
is also credited on various Wurzels songs; whether this is for
his arrangement of songs, or whether he was involved in the
actual songwriting remains a mystery. His last production credit
was on the 1980 I Hate JR single (and its subsequent
inclusion on the 1983 Freshly Cut album). |
Richard
De Silva
(producer 1980s) |
Producer
on the 1982 Coughin'
Song single and four tracks on the 1983 Freshly
Cut album. He may also have been 'De Sylva' who co-wrote
Springtime (b-side to Farmer Bill's Cowman). |
Sil
Willcox
Wurzels manager (2001?-present)
|
Sil
Willcox was approached to manage The Wurzels in the early part
of the the new Millennium. A local Somerset lad, he had been
in various bands as a young man before making the move into
management with The Stranglers. He has been responsible for
breathing new life into The Wurzels, and getting them back into
the charts where they belong! Sil lives and works from his music
studio and offices in a converted farmhouse in Falkland near
Bath - within easy staggering distance of the famous Tucker's
Grave cider pub. |
